'Mummy, there's a new girl'.


 Mummy, there's a new girl is the sister publication to Short Perspectives- a children's fiction book promoting diversity and difference.

At the age of 16, when in the midst of my childcare diploma, I found myself on placement amongst curious children- who's questions I couldn't answer. In all the settings I worked in; I had no resources to help me explain why I was small, nothing that could make it make sense in their young minds. There was no one that looked like me in any books, media or art- the book I needed as a child, and as a child practitioner didn't exist. 


SO I WROTE IT. 

5 years later, my power point presentation is now a fully illustrated, published, children's book; 

'Mummy, there's a new girl'- is a book that highlights diversity and that it's ok to be different. 
When a new girl joins the class, many of the children pick on her for her looks, but one brave little boy looks past her differences and learns that really- size is no big deal!

Illustrated by the fantastic David Smith.

  ‘Having Dwarfism, one thing that I’ve found the most challenging growing up, is truly being able to communicate or explain what it is like to live with the condition. Being born with ‘Achondroplasia’- has made me have to think about things in ways no one around me needed to. It’s highlighted things which to others, get no second thought, and its created challenges in things most do with such ease. Whilst I do not feel bitter towards my condition- I’ve created ‘Short Perspectives’ to louden the voices on the challenges that sit within it, so that others can improve in their awareness and understanding. Short Perspectives Launch Night

  20th October 2022 saw the soft launch of Short Perspectives. Held at the Riverfront Theatre in Partnership with Urban Circle Newport.  Guests were welcomed to a short film screening and the launch of the Life Being Little gallery which is currently on display at the Riverfront Theatre for the duration of October.  More visuals and information coming soon.

Meet the writer: Danielle Webb

  Hello!  I’m Danielle Webb, and I'm pretty much your typical 23-year-old.... I work, socialise and everything in-between!  The only difference being, I do it all at 3f11 tall.   I was born with a condition called Achondroplasia, a hereditary condition in which the growth of long bones by ossification of cartilage is restricted, resulting in very short limbs and sometimes a face which is small in relation to the skull. So, in other words- I'm short! Achondroplasia is the most common form of dwarfism and is known as short limb dwarfism. Meaning my torso- is very similar to that of yours! But my limbs are short- this means that at 23 years old, I stand at the same height as your average six-year-old.
